The three major business-school accreditations compared: who runs AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA, where their schools are, and how they overlap.

AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA are the three major international business-school accreditations. They are often mentioned in the same breath, but they are run by different organisations, based in different regions, and assess different things. This report explains what separates them, using the accreditors' own figures and Gradia's verified catalogue data.
AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA are the three major business-school accreditations. AACSB is American and accredits the whole school (1,084 worldwide, 51% of them in the United States). EQUIS is European and international (240 schools). AMBA is British and focuses on MBA programmes (305 schools). Holding all three is called Triple Crown.
What is each accreditation?
Each accreditation is awarded by a different organisation and looks at something slightly different. AACSB and EQUIS assess the whole business school; AMBA focuses on MBA and postgraduate programmes. The table below shows who runs each, where it is based, and how many schools currently hold it.

How they differ by geography
The three bodies cover very different parts of the world. AACSB is American in origin, and 51% of the schools it accredits are in the United States. EQUIS and AMBA were founded in Europe, and almost none of their schools are American, at 1% and 1% respectively. So a US school will almost always hold AACSB and rarely the other two, while a European or Asian school is more likely to hold EQUIS or AMBA.
How many schools hold each, and how they overlap
Most schools hold only one or two of the three. Among the 38 schools with executive programs on Gradia, 33 hold AACSB, 26 hold EQUIS and 16 hold AMBA. Only 15 hold all three (Triple Crown). AMBA is the rarest of the three in our catalogue, partly because it accredits programmes rather than whole schools.
Which accreditation is best?
None of the three is simply better than the others. They measure different things and come from different regions, so a school holding EQUIS is not stronger or weaker than one holding AACSB. What matters more is that a school holds at least one recognised international accreditation.
