Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad
Why IIMA?
About Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) was established in 1961 by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat, with active academic assistance from Harvard Business School in its formative years. Located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, it is a public autonomous institution of national importance, governed under the IIM Act of 2017. IIMA's founding mission was to develop professional managers capable of addressing the complex challenges of a newly independent, rapidly industrialising India β a mission that has evolved but never been abandoned. Today, the school is driven by a philosophy that management education must be grounded in context: case studies drawn from Indian and emerging-market realities sit alongside global frameworks. Its influence on Indian corporate and public life has been disproportionate to its size, and that continues to define its institutional identity.

Executive Education at a Glance
IIMA's executive education arm, operated through the IIMA Executive Education office and the Management Development Programmes (MDP) division, is one of the largest and most established in Asia, having run programmes continuously since the 1970s. The school offers over 100 open-enrolment programmes annually alongside a substantial portfolio of customised programmes for corporate clients β organisations including Tata Group, ONGC, and various public sector undertakings have commissioned bespoke interventions here. Thematic strengths cluster around general management, leadership, finance and financial markets, strategy, public policy and governance, family business, and digital transformation. Programmes range in duration from three days to three weeks, with the flagship Advanced Management Programme (AMP) running over several weeks for senior leaders typically holding C-suite or VP-level positions. Most programmes are delivered in-person on the Ahmedabad campus, with a growing set of online and blended options introduced post-2020. Open programme fees for short courses typically range from βΉ60,000 to βΉ3,00,000 (approximately USD 700β3,600), making IIMA executive education notably accessible relative to Western peer institutions.
Campus and Facilities
The IIMA campus is one of the most architecturally significant business school campuses in the world β designed by the American architect Louis Kahn, whose signature use of exposed brick, geometric forms, and interplay of light and shadow gives the older campus (the Louis Kahn Plaza area) an atmosphere unlike any other management school on earth. The newer campus extension, designed by Balkrishna Doshi, a Pritzker Prize laureate and Kahn's former associate, continues the architectural dialogue. For executive participants, the campus offers dedicated residential facilities, seminar rooms equipped for case discussions, and library resources covering one of the largest collections of India-specific business cases in existence β IIMA has produced over 4,000 cases, many of which are distributed globally through Harvard Business Publishing. Ahmedabad itself, Gujarat's commercial capital and a UNESCO World Heritage City, adds genuine texture: it is the headquarters of major industrial groups including Adani and the spiritual home of Amul, offering a living laboratory for studying Indian enterprise at close range.
Faculty and Research
IIMA's faculty numbers approximately 110 full-time professors, drawn from Indian and international academic institutions, with doctoral training from universities including MIT, Carnegie Mellon, London Business School, and the Indian Statistical Institute. Research centres of particular relevance to executive education include the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE.CO), which has backed over 400 startups and is one of India's most active university-linked venture development platforms, and the Misra Centre for Financial Markets and Economy, which drives applied research on Indian capital markets. Faculty are expected to produce original case studies in addition to journal publications, creating an unusually direct pipeline between fieldwork-based research and classroom application. Several faculty members serve as board members or advisors to major Indian corporations and government bodies, ensuring that the intellectual content in executive classrooms is tested against live institutional realities.
Student Body, Alumni, and Career Outcomes
IIMA's executive education cohorts are predominantly Indian, reflecting the school's positioning as the primary destination for India's senior management community, but international participants from South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa attend with increasing regularity, particularly for the longer general management programmes. The broader IIMA alumni network spans over 40,000 graduates across degree and executive programmes, with notable density in the leadership ranks of India's largest corporations, consulting firms, and financial institutions. Alumni hold senior positions at McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC Bank, and across the Indian startup ecosystem, with several serving as founders or CEOs of companies listed on Indian public markets. For executive participants, the network effect is immediate: a room full of IIMA MDP alumni represents, in practice, a who's-who cross-section of Indian industry, a peer group that many participants cite as the most durable return on their investment.
